My name is Gabriella Cramer, and my passion is maritime safety.
How is it achieved, and how can we do better?
I worked onboard yachts ranging from 25m to 60m in both the interior & deck departments during my late teens and early 20s. I had my share of experiences (both positive & negative) and left to continue learning. Recognizing my love for the ocean, I majored in Marine Affairs & Policy with a Minor in Environmental Science at the UMiami where I became scuba diving certified, collected trash from our waterways & studied marine life in our oceans. After earning my Bachelor's degree, I worked as a legal assistant for a local maritime attorney on the plaintiff's side, where we advocated for crew wage rights, recovery from personal injury claims, & sought accountability for incidents, etc. My personal experience onboard yachts, along with assisting on these cases, enlightened me on the importance of prevention. I pursued a Master’s in Maritime Law at the University of Southampton & worked for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) non-profit promoting safety at sea whilst fundraising then sought a role where I could apply my studies to help prevent incidents. For the last seven years, I worked at a prominent yacht management company in Fort Lauderdale, FL, assisting thousands of crew members worldwide, internal team members, owners & their representatives in becoming more confident in their roles through understanding & implementing compliance. I believe we shouldn’t wait for tragedies to strike before realizing we could have done better. We can and should take proactive steps to improve safety for ourselves, our crew, the environment & our industry. I hope that GC Maritime Consulting & Training, along with our team’s efforts, inspire others to strive for "best practice" as well.
